Basey (officially the Municipality of Basey; pronounced “bah-SY”) is a 1st class municipality in the province of Samar, Eastern Visayas, Philippines. It lies across the San Juanico Strait from Tacloban City.
History
Founded in 1591
The name and the town
From the Waray word 'mabaysay' meaning beautiful; pronounced 'Basai' or 'Basay' (no 'ey' sound in the Waray-Waray language)
Strategically located across Tacloban; satellite commercial and trade center in the southwestern area of Samar
On 8 November 2013, Basey was one of the places heavily devastated by Super Typhoon Haiyan, leaving more than 200 people dead.
